Tuesday Evening
Obviously, little business is conducted on Tuesday evening, but here are my notes from Brother Micah Carter's excellent sermon: I was greatly blessed by it and so I didn't take notes quite fast enough to think that my outline matches his. Brother Eddie Sutton was recognized and received several standing ovations in gratitude for his 35 years of service.
James 5:7-11 | Micah Carter
Are you suffering? Are you struggling? That is the challenge
that James’ audience faced.
1.)
Patient Endurance
a.
James 5:7-8
b.
What he calls them to is patience
i.
Patience is hard, especially in the face of trials
ii.
The alternative to patience is surrender. We do
not have time to quit.
c.
Why?
i.
The coming of the Lord sets a deadline (work for
the night is coming)
ii.
Our hope in the coming of the Lord calls us to patience
not impatience
iii.
The hope we have is worth pressing on to.
iv.
Because like a farmer, you do not set the
timeline. You work at the right time and wait until the right time. You keep
farming even when there is nothing visible to show for it.
v.
“One of the greatest ways for you and I to lose
heart is when we try to do what only God can do.”
vi.
Your hope and your anchor cannot be rooted in
anything less solid than the return of Jesus. You can’t be encouraged by
promises of a better economy, better leadership, better health, better wealth,
greater security, greater opportunities. You can be encouraged by the truth
that Jesus is coming again.
2.)
How do we endure
a.
James 5:9
b.
Don’t grumble against each other
i.
We can get grouchy awfully easily! Seasons of
affliction bring out the shortness in our tempers.
ii.
Grumbling is condemning to the child of God
because it reveals hypocrisy and undermines our witness. Don’t take your
frustrations and stresses out on each other.
c.
Why?
i.
The Judge is standing at the door. (The coming
of the Lord can be an encouragement to perseverance and also a warning against
wickedness)
ii.
Satan hates is when we encourage one another and
pray together. Grumbling works on Satan’s side. Satan wants to isolate you and
consume you.
3.)
Endure happily
a.
James 5:10
b.
“You and I endure affliction more often for our
folly than for our faith… You and I more often than not endure affliction
because of our pride, because of our selfishness, because of our silliness than
for our faith in Jesus Christ.”
c.
When we endure affliction for Jesus – we are
blessed
i.
I don’t know why your affliction happened – but God
knows. Ike Job, John, Elijah, and Paul – God has a plan for your suffering
ii. If a man cuts me – I fight. A surgeon I welcome and even if he cuts me wider than the attacker because I know what he does is good and necessary. “God is not doing something to you, God is doing something for you.”
I hadn't been able to attend the meeting for several years so I determined to go to this one since I am originally from this area and pastored my first church in Orlando. All I can say about the preaching is WOW!!!! Three of the best sermons I've ever heard by anyone!! I have known Bro. Eric for several years (he's also a transplanted Florida boy to Alabama) and he did a fantastic job both in the sermon and his moderating. I didn't know Bro. Micah Carter, but he also did a tremendous message. One of the things at these meetings that is essential for all of us is encouragement. I'll have to admit to being a bit "down" the last few months. My wife is having some serious health issues and the church is not doing as good as I would like, so this meeting really helped me out. His message was just "spot on" for encouragement. I have also known Bro. Danny ever since he was a kid and his message was just WOW!! After it was over, I went up to him and told him that there were two other sermons by two, now departed brethren, that were what I call "classic". Dr. Rick Adams was my mentor and former pastor and president of Florida Baptist Schools when I went there. He was one of my favorite preachers for many years. Dr. Clyde Lanier, who was also Bro. Danny's pastor at Westwood before he went home to be with the Lord, was one of my teachers and he blessed me as well. Bro. Danny's message is now another "star in the Heaven's" on that level. His testimony was a tremendous blessing to all of us. Some of the best preaching I have heard in a long time. All I know is this; the ABA preachers are at the top for doctrinal, evangelistic and encouraging messages of any group of Baptists I know.
